What about Sannakji, live baby octopus , Korean-style?
Hey,
I have an unusual question.
I'm trieng to find out if there is such a thing as: moldy meat that smells and is a delicacy is some country?
Thanks for the help!
Hi Rasberry - I know some indigenous tribes on the island of Borneo (where I grew up) bury fresh wild boar meat mixed with salt in earthenware jars. The meat's not ready to eat, apparently, till it's maggotty. I had a friend who ate this as a traditional food.
Have you tried Chinese meat 'floss' (Rousong in Mandarin)? It's dried roasted shredded pork (or fish) that actually looks like fluffy fibres. Nice on hot freshly cooked rice or in sandwiches. The fish floss is particularly yummy between slices of fresh white buttered bread with a dollop of mayo...yummy...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rousong
There's an Indonesian version made with beef called 'abon sapi', which includes more spices such as chilli and coriander.
Hey
I didn't see cod tongues on your list. I am from Newfoundland and they are probobly my favorite food. Most people in Canada think they are pretty wierd, but man are they ever good.
cod tongues? fish have tongues?
Do you have a good resource for finding strange food outlets? I've eaten everything on your list minus a few. I live in Guangzhou. Where can we find monkey?!
Have you ever eaten spinal cord? Oh, sure you have.
When you eat steak, pork chops, lamb chops, etc. there is a little notch at the top of the t-bone. In it is a little piece of fat.
The top of the t is the animal's vertebra. The upright of the t is a rib. The piece of fat is spinal cord. I bet you've eaten it at least once!
I know it is illegal and incredibly hard to find, as well as pretty damn expensive, but i reckon live monkey brain eaten with a hot spoon and some XO sauce is the wierdest thing you can try! Yummy too... with some salmon eyes. You should also try some deep sea black cod. Extremely rare, extremely tasty, found in Bering Sea.
Another Newfoundland treat: Seal Flipper Pie.
You can usually get it around Easter when the seal hunt comes in, the flippers are sold quite cheap down by the docks and baked with veggies into a meat pie. Very dark, surprisingly lean and pretty darn good, no matter what those clueless anti-seal hunt protesters say.
Linked here from the b3ta newsletter. I love blogs like this, weird food fascinates me and out of all the odd meat sites and books I've read, you're the first person to actually make balut sound appetizing.
I think the weirdest meat I've ever had was fugu brains in Japan; tasteless and kind of pasty in texture, though the broth they were served in was delicious. We had grilled cow intestines too while we were there, but I'm not sure how "weird" that is.
OK here goes...
Soft shelled turtle - disgusting texture & not very tasty either.
Monitor Lizard - stewed in a pot with sticky rice; delicious, one of the best meals yet!
Snake - fried; delicious - soup; delicious, but a bit tough.
Alligator/Crocodile - excellent, lean & tasty.
Porcupine - pretty good; like pork but tougher.
Foie Gras - Oh my God, I hate myself for saying this, but WOW, now I know why the rich get all the best stuff! I know that the production is barbaric and I promise that I won't eat it again, but just once in your life, forget your humanity and give it a go with a decent champagne!
Oh and I also ate some really wierd green stuff that looked like a cross between cheese and jello, in Kunming. I have no idea what it was, but I suspect the locals were playing a prank and I just ate the soap. If anyone knows what it was, please DON'T tell me!
I guess not too many of you watch Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel. There's a lot of odd meats that are eaten by the host Andrew Zimmern. There's quite a few wierd meats in the Morocco and Taiwan episodes.
Namaste!

What, no members of the cat family? How about fricassee of housecat?
i have heard that wood lice are related to shrimp has anyone eaten them before if so what do they taste like? and are there specific ways to cook them or specific breeds that are best?
Where's the cat?

Iceland has rotten shark...
But yeah, I like this blog a lot. It actually respects the people who eat "weird food" instead of acting like it's the grossest, most evil thing in the world. I think the author should try some nordic/european "weird meats" like lutefisk. :)
Dear Friends,
Most food from different countries is weird to us canaians and maybe others too, but just remember that they may thing that our food is weird too. So, don't judge a book by it's cover.
I like your site. Although I don't care for meat at all, it's still really interesting to see all the different varieties that are out there. I really like reading about all the different edible bugs... Makes me a little hungry. Hah. Seriously.
PS--
Lady Cooper, I wish I could bash your brains in with the same kind of club they use to kill baby seals with.
You're a douche bag and I hope you die a very tragic, painful death.
I have a question - what are the 2 flattened animals in this link:
