Many Americans appreciate French food as the highest culinary standard. We're brought up with a few fancy French words to describe high-class food. If you dream of romantic meals and nice restaurants, it's almost inevitably French.
However, most Americans are not familiar with some of the lesser-known ingredients on French menus. There are some uncommon birds, fluffy rodents, offal (organ) meats, and according to this report, dog!
