Polar Bear Liver BAD

polar bear
Stumbled across this article about over-consumption of Vitamin A. Turns out if you eat too much polar bear liver you could DIE. With polar bears running out of habitat, maybe the news is a welcome deterrent for people who want to eat them.

"If eaten in one meal, 30 to 90 grams of polar bear liver is enough to kill a human being, or to make even sled dogs very ill." [source]

Too much beta carotene. It's like eating thousands of carrots in one sitting. That can't be good for you.

Not just polar bear, liver of any animal at the top of the food chain is highly contaminated with bad stuff. Even the fat is dangerous. Dead whales are automatically classified as hazardous sites. So tigers, lions and bears should be off the menu.

o_o; Generally I heard of drinking kiddney juice of bears... Never really heard people eating bear liver :V maybe this is the reason why? Hm so if some predators were to eat human body... our livers would be highly toxic? (since we're on the very top of the food chain?) scary thought though -_-;

It's not actually eating too much beta carotene that's a problem. One can eat as much of that as they like as it's not metabolized into vitamin A unless needed. Eating way too many carrots or other beta carotene rich foods could turn you orange, but it won't kill you with vitamin A toxicity.

Eating straight vitamin A however, can be toxic as noted.

Control the consumption of beta carotene for a healthy body.
