Pig Hoof vs. Turtle

We were up in Beijing with our favorite new band Reptile & Retard, and across the alley from the Boat club (awesome frozen mojitos!), we grabbed a nice meal at the Qingdao Restaurant. Qingdao is a city on the coast of North-East China, and it's most known for the main Chinese export beer "Tsingtao" which is the old spelling of "Qingdao" and should be pronounced "ching-dow", not "sting-tow"... The other thing Qingdao is known for is seafood, and we had some fine fish here, but I'm going to tell you about the weird stuff -- Pig Feet, and a cute little Turtle that ended up in my mouth.

The turtle -- I got to pick it out myself, alive -- was marinated in a wonderfully complex smokey tea sauce. There's not much meat on this little guy, and lots of bones, but what we did eat was super delicious! Such a bold and curious flavor. We turned it over, upside down, and ate the bits of meat from under the shell. Then we nibbled on the little creature's head and neck. Good juicy bits there!

Then we ordered a massive plate of pig hooves, or pork feet. These were truly disgusting, but delicious. They're full of cartilage, tendon, fat, bone, and more fat. Reptile, the singer in the band, wouldn't eat them. Then Retard did after some beers, and finally Reptile dove in and enjoyed it. Crazy guy! (If you're in Denmark, go see them play live.)

We followed up the dinner with an awesome party at The Boat.

Hmmm... I'm not a fan of meat where you don't get much actual meat from the deal. Those foods sounded like WORK.

I'm of the opinion that as long as the animal is not endangered and is raised and slaughtered humanely...you can stuff your face with them. That being said, gross! We eat turtles down here too (softshells being the preferred choice...one step behind snappers), but I've just never been able to stomach eating one. They're just too ingrained in my mind as a pet. Plus, they're a reptile, and that's just not my thing either. You seem to be having quite an adventure in China. I imagine it would be a culinary delight over there. I'm not too fond of some of their slaughtering practices have known some Chinese-Americans and admire the culture and history of the country. Bon apetit.

Ahh, the Western attitude prevails once again in these posts...Instead of calling these guys sick for experimenting with another culture's cuisine, how about have an open mind. I'm a professional chef, I've made and eaten some pretty weird stuff before, and most of it is surprisingly delicious. Don't knock it til you try it people.

Hmm I love trying out new things but reptiles never grabbed my appetite... Though I would like to try croc :D o_o and some easter asian country believe eating turtle will expand your life. Some of the negative comments grabbed my attention.... Why the heck are you in this website when you don't like it? Aren't you guys equally sick for searching up and looking at these and leaving nasty comments? If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all(unless your fighting -w-) Some closed minded people sheesh!

Eating turtle isn't sick. It's a small creature that has very little in it.

Eating a cow, now that is sick! People only pick at the bits of choice meat around the animal. But a cow has so much more to offer than just some thin slabs of meat.

Go visit a meat processing plant. North Americans are rather quite disgusting for feasting and tearing away at these gentle creatures. I mean for God's sake, humans are supposed to drink human milk when growing up as an infant, and yet so many people are drinking a cow's milk! Gross!

What's next? Eating pigs who role around in their own filth?! Oh....wait.
