Guangdong Girl Saves Cats

cats, guangdong, protest

We meant to post this a while back, it's from December 2008, but we were busy eating placenta, and durian.

There's a saying in Chinese, that Guangdong people (Cantonese) eat everything with legs except the table. You see, people in Guangdong have a reputation for eating weird animals. Like dogs and cats and monkeys and snakes and lizards. A lot of northern Chinese people believe southerners eat aborted fetuses -- yes, I've heard it many times -- it's a hoax people! (If you're curious about this, there's a discussion here about how the Christian media went bonkers reporting about Chinese eating human fetuses. Oh Lordy!...)

So there's this girl in Guangdong Province, southern China, who is trying to save cats. She thinks her own people "lose face" by eating cute kittens. The photos and comments on the China Smack post are pretty interesting, you don't see this kind of action in China often.

She's not the only one, there seems to be a cat-saving movement.

We have to hand it to this girl for stepping up as a leader like this, quite impressive considering what she's up against. But the question begs to be answered, again -- why cats?

UPDATE: June 29, 2009 -- More cat saving action...
300 cats rescued from menus in Guangdong

Would someone please explain the logic behind this? The cages that hold chickens, ducks, pigs, etc. are no more pleasant, and the treatment of the animals no better. The restaurant across the street from my home has snakes in cages, right out on public display, but I don't see anyone protesting and letting the snakes free.

A friend of mine from Fujian claims to have eaten a human foetus. I have no evidence for this, but the friend is reliable, and at least this isn't a friend of a friend of a friend story. Sorry for leaving this comment anonymously.

Let me tell you "why cats"

Firstly, these cats are most companion animals kept by local citizens from places other than Guangdong. These cats are stolen. The theves are criminals actually.

Secondly, these evil people treat these cats in an extremely cruel way. They shipped the cats in small cages not enough to strech their bodies, and do not feed them any food or water during a long and suffering journey. Then when the cats arrive Guangdong the market, many are injoured heavily with legs or tails broken. Then the evil slaugters caught them by necks with sharp hooks, and beat them with iron, and skinned them alive, and most shockingly throw them into boiling water when still alive!
If you have caught sight of this terrible cruelty, if you have seen the mournful eyes with tears of the cats carers, if you listen to their heart-broken crying, you, sir, would not have asked such a question!

Thanks for clearing the hoax about aborted fetuses. I couldn't think better out of it since I heard it. I guess it really had put down the image of Chinese. You might also like to view my portfolio of websites here . Any feedback would be welcome.

Thanks

I think some cultures view the consumption of dog meat to be a part of their traditional cuisine, while others consider consumption of dog to be inappropriate and offensive. In response to criticisms, proponents of dog meat have argued that distinctions between livestock and pets is subjective, and that there is no difference with eating the meat of different animals, while countering that those critical of dog meat consumption are guilty of cultural supremacy, if not racism
