China Bans Dog Meat During Olympics

During the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, the government banned some restaurants from serving dog meat and encouraged Koreans to not eat dog when around foreign visitors. There was a lot of hoopla surrounding this, with anti-dog meat organizations rallying and "Korean culture" supporters defending their right to eat dog meat. It's important to note that there were Korean natives and foreigners on both sides of the argument, and I'm sure there always will be.

Looks like China has done the same for the Beijing 2008 Olympic summer games. "Restaurant workers are advised to 'patiently' suggest other options to diners who order dog." [source]

That goes along with a list of all sorts of things they've covered up from foreign eyes for the Olympics.

We've eaten dog meat in many places around China, and other countries, and we've even seen in on the menu at some luxury hotels and airport lounges. The shocking, gruesome pictures of dog meat you might find on the internet are often taken in rural villages, where the butchering and cooking of animals is usually out in the open, for public viewing. It's the same for most slaughtered animals there. You can hand-pick your fish or chicken or goat, and have it slaughtered, butchered, bled, and cooked right before your eyes. How is this different from what happens every day in the modern, urban, Western world? We do our slaughter behind closed doors. But we still do it, and you eat it and you pay for it to be done again (vegetarians excluded, of course).

More about eating dog meat.

And more about anti-weird meat propaganda.

Nice blog you get here buddy..Dog Meats are also been popular here in the Philippines but nowadays it was being banned by the animal welfare. So, it became illegal to butcher a dog here..But dog meat really tastes good when cook well (it taste like duck meat too). It brings heat to your body, something like an aphrodisiac (is my spelling correct). Some beer drinkers here always make it sure that there's a dog meat on the table.

Btw, would like to do a link exchange my site? mustlovefood.com...it's a social network for food lovers like you..

Please shoot me an email if you are interested..linkbuilder@twobudz.com

Hi there,

Just found this blog and I love it!

I see myself as a strange food eater too. Being a Chinese, I'm used to eat all kind of food that Westerners may consider as something disgusting. Just name it: every inner part of lamb (intestine, kidney, lungs, even testicle (it's a popular soup here in Indonesia! I can show you the picture should you interested to see). Dog meat is a food I eat once in month, also lizard, snakes, monkey, pigeons, horse, etc, etc.

you're an asshole.

dogs get beaten to death and treated even worse than all the other animals. you should do your homework.

someone should treat you just once like they treat those poor dogs.

Because Livestock Processing Act does not cover dog meat, there is no restriction about how to kill a dog for meat. At the meat market, the need to slaughter the dogs quickly usually means dogs are electrocuted, similar to cattle. However, especially in rural areas where people slaughter dogs to cook and eat on their own, the common method is to hang the dog and beat it to death, in an attempt to tenderize the meat. (This, however, may be counterproductive; while beating the meat does tenderize it, an animal that dies in a stressed state generally produces tougher and less tasty meat.)
